Ladies residence donates pads to Payneville Primary School

“This initiative was inspired by our residence’s principles, which are unity, humility, creativity and to be the best,” say the group of 12.

The Impumelelo Ladies Residence from the University of Johannesburg donated sanitary pads to learners at Payneville Primary School last Friday.

The ladies, which were Botlhokwa Gabanakgosi, Portia Siphambili, Siphesihle Mnyandu, Nonkululeko Gwala, Wendy Nkosi, Amukelani Ntimane, Catherine Ngobeni, Senamile Thabede, Adelaide Mosebi, Khomotso Masenamela, Thando Masuku and Tshegofatso Moshoeu, say they realised pads can be quite costly, particularly because of the VAT and increase, therefore, they found it necessary to donate sanitary pads to the school.

“We were approached by Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare who asked for pads donations.

“It is a tradition for Impumelelo mentors to collect pads and donate them to any school of their choice because we are aware of the challenges girls face during that time of the month and that sometimes prevents them from going to school.

“The aim of this initiative was, therefore, to improve the conditions of young school girls from underprivileged communities and more specifically to restore their dignity and confidence during their menstruation period,” says the group of women.

Upon visiting the school, the ladies also addressed issues of first-time expectancy, good hygienic practice during the cycle and generally how the girls can take care of themselves and each other during that time of the month.
