Violence against women and children still a concern

There were 1.66 million serious crimes reported in the country between April 2017 and March 2018.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele released the 2017/2018 crime stats, last Tuesday, revealing reported crimes have gone down in 2018, with a 4.4 per cent decrease from the total recorded in 2016/2017.

Cele says the statistics show there were 20 336 people killed during this period which shows an increase of 6.9 per cent.

“This means there were 57 people killed on a daily basis during this period across the country.”

The minister explained during a media briefing he was concerned about the high number of people who were killed daily.

“The crime stats are nothing to write home about when we have so many people being killed.

“It doesn’t matter what figures we give out or what has been reduced, if people are still being killed then we can’t find any joy out of that,” he explains.

Gauteng occupies the third position in the criminal behaviour motives to murder with 264 cases of mob justice murders, 110 killings related to taxi violence and 28 police killings.

There were 1 662 815 community reported crimes in the country with 438 113 other serious crimes, 433 966 crimes reported as the results of police action.

Cele says they have identified a 2 930 increase in the killing of women with an 11 per cent difference of 291 killings compared to in the previous year.

“There were 36 731 sexual offences reported, seeing a -661 count difference from the previous year when 37 392 cases were reported as crimes related to women.”

The minister explains he is concerned about the 17.4 per cent increase in crimes committed against girls who were murdered during this period.

“A total of 294 girls were reported murdered while 691 boys were killed with a 20.4 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

“While 691 boys were victims of murder seeing a 20.4 per cent increase from the 2016/2017 period,” he explains.

These stats show Springs is a dangerous place for a woman, to own property or to drive a car or truck.

In the top 30 stations for sexual assault, Springs came in at number 14.

This was a slight decrease from the previous year when there were 31 cases reported.

Property owners will be worried to know 919 cases of burglary at residential premises were opened in Springs this year.

This figure is a decrease of 115 from the previous year.

For robberies at residential areas, there were 143 cases opened, which is a 10.9 per cent increase from the previous year.

For other property-related crime, Springs was number 29, with 2 034 reported cases which were a decrease of 63 cases from the previous year.

Other surprising statistics from the report is that Spring ranked number 25 for theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with 362 reported cases.

There were 12 reported truck hijackings in Springs, which was a slight increase from the previous year.

Cele further explains there were 115 361 contact crimes which include murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, common robbery, aggravated and sexual assault which saw a -1.1 per cent decrease during this year.
