Presida residents frustrated with illegal dumping

“When they set the fires, our clothes smell like burnt plastic,” says resident Barend Vorster.

Residents in Presida are getting increasingly frustrated with illegal dumping.

The community, which is largely rural, say the litterbugs also set illegal fires by burning the rubbish.

“These people don’t care what they throw away or burn.

“Just last week Thursday I found two kittens that had been thrown away and they got caught in the fire.

“I managed to find them on time.

“Now, I have to keep my dogs and cats inside the house because if they eat the fish scales or tins, they will die.

“When they set the fires, our clothes smell like burnt plastic,” says resident Barend Vorster.

Residents also say when it’s windy, the rubbish blows into their yards and houses and they have resorted to closing their doors and windows at all times.

The community is frustrated with why people are dumping their rubbish in their fields as the waste removal services come every week to collect the rubbish.

Residents also say the area is a crime hotspot with a lot of house break-ins and they are unhappy with the police response.

“Whenever we call the police, they tell us they are busy with shift change and take about four or five hours to respond,” says Vorster.

The Springs police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora says they haven’t received any calls from residents.

“However, we request the community to forward their concerns or complaints to us as the Springs SAPS management so we can address them,” says Ramphora.
