WATCH: Armed robbery at Selcourt and Edelweiss Engen garages

“Unfortunately a customer walked in while the robbery was taking place, but they just made her lie down. She was shaken up but thankfully nobody was injured,” says Kobus Smith, owner of the Edelweiss station.

Two Engen garage shops – in Selcourt and Edelweiss – were robbed on Friday and Saturday night respectively.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says according to the cashier of the Nigel Road filling station, two armed men came into the shop at approximately 11.38pm  robbed the Selcourt shop of R2 500 and approximately 20 packs of cigarette with the value of R900.

They then proceeded to the restaurant within the shop where they robbed three customers of R1 300 cash and a cellphone before fleeing on foot.

The owner of the Selcourt garage, Deon du Plessis declined to comment when contacted by the Addie.

Ramphora confirmed the Edelweiss incident on Monday morning but at the time of publishing said he had no further information about the robbery.

“It was an armed robbery and they took cash and cigarettes and stuff from the Quickshop like sweets and chocolates.

“It all happened very quickly, within three minutes they were out,” says Kobus Smith, owner of the Edelweiss station in Gemsbok Street.

“Unfortunately a customer walked in while the robbery was taking place, but they just made her lie down, she was shaken up but thankfully nobody was injured,” he adds.

The filling station was open for business about two hours after the robbery took place.

The suspects fled in a silver grey hatchback Toyota.

Smith believes the suspects were the same men that robbed the Engen in Selcourt on Friday night.
