An Eastvale resident, Albert Olivier, has grown an abnormally large avocado right in his backyard.
The avocados grow naturally without any external assistance.
So the avocados are not in any way artificial.
These are known as “pumpkin avocados” that are mostly known to be common in KwaZulu-Natal.
The largest avocado that was picked this time around was 1.435kg – when he picked it.
This is quite large for avocados that are not genetically modified.
Olivier says the growing will start in November and the avocados will be ready to get picked by July/ August.
Because the tree that the avocados grow from is incredibly large, Olivier will ask someone to help him pick them using a picking stick.
Even though the avocados are large and could make him a great fortune, he says he does not sell them, and only keeps them for himself and shares with family and friends.
He added that the avocados take two weeks, at most, before they become ripe and ready to be enjoyed.
