EMPD officers appear to be loitering in the CBD

Residents irate at the sight of EMPD officers loitering in the CBD.

Springs resident Nompilo Madondo was concerned when she saw a group of EMPD officers on 5th Avenue that appeared to be loitering and not doing anything.

“Can these people be exposed please because they are paid for not doing anything?

“The only thing they do is sit and do their shopping around The Avenues and go to Shoprite the whole day.

“Come month end, they get R16 000 in their bank accounts, including the overtime.

“Tax is up, the petrol price is up and you find people like this getting paid for what they don’t deserve,” alleged an irate Madondo.

According to Kobeli Mokheseng, the media liaison officer for the EMPD, there are three main functions of the officers:

• To enforce traffic law to minimise accidents, promote road safety and traffic flow within the City of Ekurhuleni in accordance to the Batho Pele principles.

• To execute crime prevention activities within the city and also to create a safer living environment for all.

• To execute by-law activities in order to ensure compliance and adherence to all Council By-laws.

The officers are based in suburbs, industrial sites, townships, freeways and in other areas that are within the borders of Ekurhuleni.

“We turn to differ with the complainant citing that EMPD officers in the Springs CBD are not patrolling as they are supposed to but are instead loitering around town and chatting in groups.

“Those officers in uniform were signed on duty and they are carrying out a police visibility task, among other duties.

“We are also working hand in hand with other law enforcement agents. If a concerned member/s of the public wishes to report a crime hotspot around town, they are at liberty to call our Call Taking Centre on 011 458 0911, 086 054 3000 or the SAPS on the 10111 number.

“If a petitioner has enough evidence and reason to believe that those officers in question were not patrolling but loitering around town, they can visit our Springs precinct (walk-in centre) and request to speak to the precinct commander so that a statement can be made before the grievance is thoroughly investigated by our Integrity and Standards (Internal Affairs) Unit,” says Mokheseng.
