Fire at Esda Retirement Village claims one life

“A security guard spotted the fire and raised the alarm.”

An elderly resident died after a fire at Esda Retirement Village on Saturday evening.

A security guard spotted the fire and raised the alarm at approximately 10.30pm last night.

The fire broke out in the bedroom of a home in the centre.

Although the official cause of the fire is not yet know, it is suspected the fire was caused by an electric blanket.

Residents, police, fire brigade, CPF members and the security personnel all came out to help put out the fire.

Petro Burr-Dixon, Esda administrator, says: “I’m shocked and heartsore about what has happened.

“She was one of the first owners on the new side and she was special to us.

“Thank you for all the people who helped us, if it wasn’t for them, it could have been much worse.”

** The Addie has withheld the woman’s name until we can confirm that her family have been notified of her death.
