First-year celebration of Life Renal and Dialysis Centre at Life Springs Parkland Clinic

The Life Renal Dialysis Centre at the Life Springs Parkland Hospital celebrated its first anniversary on Tuesday.

The centre, which opened its doors June 12 last year now treats 33 patients three times a week.

Staff and patients gathered at the centre to reminisce on how far they have come together.

“We were the first patients here when the centre started last year.

“Everyday we come here is another day we add to our lives.

“As you are celebrating your first year, I’m also celebrating another year on earth,” says Ephraim Masina, who is a patient at the centre.

Other patients who spoke at the celebration praised the centre’s staff for their friendliness and the respect with which they treat patients.

Mandisa Makeleni, a registered nurse at the centre says, “Thank you for your support and for trusting us with your life.

“Our ultimate priority is to get our patients on the transplant list so they can get new kidneys so that they can get those few hours of their life back that they spend here.”

In future, the centre is planning on starting a support group so that more people can be aware of the disease (chronic renal failure), as it becomes a challenge for family and friends to look after their patient if they have no knowledge of the disease and improves the patient’s likelihood to comply with treatment.
