Community members picket for release of murder accused

Welgedacht community members picket for the release of other community members who were involved in mob justice.

Community members of Welgedacht picketed outside the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Monday to protest for the release of seven community members who were arrested last Thursday after being part of a community mob justice action that resulted in the murder of a resident who is said to be an ex-convict.

A male resident of the Welgedacht community has been murdered by other members of the community who say the ex-convict, who is said to have been out on parole, had committed or had been involved in committing crimes within the community.

The community members who have not been arrested stood in unity with those who were and insisted that they should be released or that the police should arrest everyone who was present on the afternoon of the attack.

Among the six males and one female who was arrested was the community’s secretary.

“I was hijacked outside my house in December with one of the people who has been arrested’, says a community member who has asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons.

The members say they have been failed by the police after having opened several cases that were not solved.

The community sings to make their voices heard.

The murder accused appeared in Springs Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the court ruled that two of the six males would be released and charged with assault and not murder.

The other accused will be remanded in custody and appear for a bail application at a later stage.
