No bail for bishop

A magistrate has denied the bail application of the Duduza bishop who stands accused of the rape of a minor, on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old man, who is awaiting judgement in another rape case, appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court after his bail hearing was postponed to allow for further investigation.

This after a teenager laid a complaint against the bishop on May 27.

The court heard that the man has previously been convicted of the rape of a minor, for which he served a six-year sentence.

He was also acquitted of similar charges in 2007 in Phuthaditshaba, Free State.

The head investigating officer said he needed time to conduct further investigations.

He was out on R3 000 bail in the rape case of another minor for which he was arrested in November 2016.

The judgement of that case is set for today (Thursday).
