Collect plastic, save the owls and planet
Members of the Rotary Club of Springs are busy with a plastic collecting project.
Cheryl Havenga from the club says they are in the process of setting up a collection point for plastic at Casa Nossa restaurant.
The plastic collected will go to the Owl Rescue Centre in Hartebeespoort.
“Volunteers of the centre use the plastic to make owl and bat houses,” says Cheryl.
“So besides saving the planet from plastic waste, we are aiding in the protection of owls and bats.”

The Owl Rescue Centre started collecting plastic at the beginning of the year and Rotary Club of Springs has since then also started collecting for the centre.
Rotary’s Springs Girls’ High School Interact Club also came on board and started collecting plastic at the school.
Cheryl says they sent the first load of plastic to the centre last week.
“It was a lot of plastic.”
According to Cheryl, the project started when the centre’s volunteers noticed the huge global problem with plastic.
They came up with the idea of collecting plastic and using it to build owl houses.

The volunteers at the centre make the houses themselves and normally use wood, but decided on plastic when the issue arose.
“They recycle the plastic themselves and also do the molding of the houses and their respective parts themselves,” says Cheryl.
The centre rescues owls from all over the country and rehabilitates them.
When the owls are healed or cured, they release them back into the wild.
“The centre sells these owl houses to the public, to encourage them to put up the owl houses at their homes.
“This helps with the re-population of owls as well as bats and helps diminish rodent issues,” she says.
