Licensing department queues frustrate residents

Avoid going to the traffic licensing department on the first and third of every month.

Springs residents are frustrated with the long queues at the traffic licensing department.

The residents allege that they are forced to wait in long queues before they are served.

They also allege that there appears to be a shortage of staff to help them, as there several empty counters with no employees behind them.

Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, says, “The department does its best on a daily basis to ensure that service is rendered as expeditiously as possible.

“The long queues that are inevitable at all licensing departments countrywide is a matter that daily prompts us to muster our resources and skills to manage them effectively.

“Needless to say, like in many service-rendering environments, there exist peak days/periods, like the first and third of every month.

“These provide the department with challenges which are customarily and consistently handled in a professional fashion.”

When asked why the department does not hire more permanent staff instead of rotating interns every year, Kgasago says, “This is a learnership programme and its primary purpose is to afford as many unemployed members of the community an opportunity to gain experience in the licensing environment and in the same vein, to assist full-time employees in expediting processes.

“The increase in staff complement doesn’t just happen.

“This is reliant on a number of factors, for example, availability of vacancies, budgetary matters, etc.”
