Selcourt resident up for the Humanitarian of the Year Award

“It's a great feeling to know you're helping people and making a difference in their lives," says Moukangwe.

Lerato Moukangwe from Selcourt been nominated to win the Humanitarian of the Year Award.

“The whole thing took me by surprise.

“One of the organisers found me on Facebook and told me he saw what I have been posting and trying to do and would like for me to enter the competition.

“I initially felt I hadn’t done enough to deserve the nomination, but I realised that this award would give me the platform to do what I can to help people,” says Moukangwe.

The Humanitarian of the Year Award, which was founded by Copperstone Event Production and Creative Agency, goes to the nominated individual who is compassionate, humane, unselfish, altruistic, generous, kind, sympathetic, charitable, philanthropic, public-spirited, socially concerned and seeking to promote human welfare.

Members of the public can then vote for candidates they feel is most deserving of the award.

As part of the campaign, each candidate has a project he or she focuses on.

Moukangwe is currently working on a “Pet Homelessness” campaign and is trying to collect pet food, blankets and so on for the Springs SPCA.

The 30-year-old is also planning to give talks at schools about sterilisation.

For Moukangwe, being nominated for this award has been a blessing.

“I love talking to people and having a sense of purpose.

“It’s a great feeling to know you’re helping people and making a difference in their lives,” says Moukangwe.

Moukangwe, who is a dancer by profession, says people can also donate their time if they do not have the resources.

“I want to project a brighter image of Springs and to show that we can work together.

“For me, Springs is the centre of the universe,” says Moukangwe.
