The day is celebrated worldwide on May 12 as it is the birthday of the pioneer of modern nursing Florence Nightingale.

Nightingale fought for her patients regardless of faith and background and elevated nursing from an unskilled profession to a medical one.

The celebrated English woman emphasised that sensitivity to patient needs was key to recovery as well as a focus on the physical, psychological and emotional aspects of the patient.

For Nieuwoudt, this is why, regardless of technological advances, nurses will always have a critical role in healthcare.

“A human soul and a human heart can never be replaced with a robot,” says Nieuwoudt.

The day also formed part of the Nursing Now campaign which aims to empower and support nurses in meeting 21st century health challenges.
