Hyacinth over Dersley Dam a concern for residents.

Hyacinth doubles every four weeks.

The hyacinth growing over Dersely Dam is worrying residents who live in Dersley.

The hyacinth grows rapidly and doubles every four weeks.

“The wind blows the bulbs up to the edges and then it just keeps on growing.

“I guarantee that if you put a rod in there, you won’t be able to take it out,” says concerned resident Peter Edwards.

According to Themba Gadebe, the spokesperson for the metro, it is aware of the water hyacinth problem at the Dersley Dam.

“Work was done at the dam in September last year and we managed to get the hyacinth coverage to below five per cent.

Seeds of the water hyacinth on the banks of the dam. If left uncollected, they will grow rapidly all over the dam.

“Currently we are spraying herbicide and are also physically removing it.

“We are monitoring the dam and endeavour to ensure that the lake does not regress to where it was last year.”

Although he is pleased with the work that was done by the metro last year, ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin is concerned about the hyacinth that was not collected by the metro and is now rotting on the side of the dam.

“If this small amount of water hyacinth is not collected, it will spread very quickly.

“The litter around the dam is also a concern and there is no rubbish bin nearby,” says Sheodin.
