During the search, five pieces of gold, a cutting torch, gold refinery equipment, 12 shotgun ammunition rounds and cash was seized.

“A 43-year-old EMPD official was arrested,” says Ramphora.

Walking distance from these premises, police arrived at the shack of the EMPD official’s 25-year-old friend.

They conducted a search and found a 9mm firearm with eight ammunition rounds hidden under the carpet.

A further charge of negligence in the handling of a firearm was added to the arrest of the official.

Cluster commander Maj Gen Girly Mbele applauded work well done by the Cluster Vispol Trio Task Team in reducing the unlicensed firearms quantity from the hands of criminals, as well as rooting out corrupt police officials and bringing them to book.
