JUST IN: Body discovered near The Avenues and Springs Addie offices, cause of death unknown

A body was discovered by car guard David Molopo on Eighth Street in an alley near the corner of Fifth Avenue shortly after noon today.

Molopo says: “I first noticed the man on Saturday evening and thought he was just sleeping.
“I thought he was one of those nyope boys.
“This morning I saw him there again and noticed he was still in the same position and called out to him.”
When he received no response from the man, Molopo went into the Springs Advertiser offices to report his suspicious discovery.
Addie staff accompanied Molopo across the road to investigate.
Peering into the alleyway staff noticed there was no movement from the body, indicating he was probably dead.
Staff then alerted the police and paramedics who arrived on scene within minutes.
Arriving on the scene in two paramedics vehicles, the tight space in which the body was lying required that the smallest of the responders squeeze into the narrow alley to check on the man.
Coming out of the alley the paramedic declared the man dead and handed his wallet to another paramedic.
The wallet contained no identification.
Netcare911 spokesperson Tebogo Magoro says: “Paramedics were called to the scene where they found the victim already deceased.
“We declared him dead and handed over the case to the police.”
Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for the Springs police, who was on the scene, called for police officers to investigate the scene.
“When we arrived we called the paramedics who went into the alley to investigate.
“They certified the man dead and reported that there were no visible injuries on the body.
“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine whether there was any foul play and what the cause of death is.”
The identity of the man is still unknown but police are taking steps to identify him.
Ramphora says that an inquest will be opened.
Police investigators are currently on the scene.
More information will follow as it becomes available.
