Shooting incident in Daggafontein ‘not a farm attack’

An elderly woman was shot in the head during an incident with two armed suspects in Daggafontein.

Despite reports stating that a shooting incident in Daggafontein was a farm attack, Springs police say it was ‘only a shooting, not a farm attack’.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for the Springs police says the incident happened after midnight, in the early hours of Saturday morning when a 36-year-old Daggafontein resident was drinking water and saw two men walking past the kitchen window.

“He opened the door and told them to ‘voetsek’,” Ramphora says.

The man’s elderly mother heard the commotion and went to investigate.

A suspect came from behind the man, armed with a shotgun.

“When the man tried to close the gate, his mother took a broom to hit the suspect with, but the suspect turned around and shot one round with the shotgun at the woman, who was shot in the head.”

The man’s sister came out and started screaming and the suspects fled the scene.

The woman was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital in critical condition.

A case of attempted murder has been opened at the Springs Police Station.
