April 14 marked the start of the Tamil New Year, which is in the year 5119.

Men, women and children came together to pray to Lord Ganesha for blessings in the new year.

Worshipers were dressed in their finest attire as they offered gifts to the deities to bless them for the year ahead.

Alongside the prayer, the association also donated food to a struggling family.

“The women pay R108 for prayers, and from that money, we use R10 from each person to buy a food hamper for a needy family in our community.

“The food is enough to last them for a whole month.

“It is important for us to give to others as we have been blessed,” said co-ordinator of the Springs Tamil Association, Ferona Naicker.

The Guru, Vishendrin James, predicted that this would be a good year for rain and for job opportunities.

The prayers ended with everybody enjoying the vegetarian feast that had been prepared for the day.
