Bhairavi Sungum of Springs host Tamil New Year celebrations

Festivities lasted well into the night as the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs celebrated the Tamil New Year.

The Bhairavi Sungum of Springs hosted a cultural concert of songs, dance and music in Tamil on Saturday night to celebrate their heritage and the new year.

As there are seven days in a week and 12 months in a year, similarly the Tamil almanacs have a sixty-year cycle and each year has a unique name and this year, is called Vilambi Varusham meaning The Year of Progress and Prosperity.

Benoni’s nightingale Kamenie Katha sang beautifully at the Tamil New Year celebrations.

Young and old were dressed in their finest cultural clothes as they celebrated the new year.

The guest speaker at the celebrations, Thiru Logan Pillay, spoke about the importance of preserving their culture, beliefs and heritage, epsecially among the youth.

“They need to attend Tamil school and converse in Tamil.

“Parents should make an effort to speak vernacular as children pick up languages easier.

“We should encourage spiritual growth and foster the continuation of our culture and beliefs.

“I would have loved to give this address in Tamil,” says Pillay.

President of the Benoni Tamil School Board Thiru Logan Pillay, during his address at the Tamil New Year celebrations hosted by Bhairavi Sungum of Springs on Saturday.

Pillay added that parents should be careful not to give their children too many choices when it comes to their culture and language, but also cautioned against being too strict with them as that pushes them away.

The attendees were entertained by top recording artists Kamenie Katha, Edward Reddy, and Kuveshan Reddy with dance performances by the Natya-Kala-Keseri Dance Academy of South Africa.
