WATCH: Springs flat gutted by fire in Fourth Street

“It’s all gone,” says Agu.

Cyril Agu’s living room was gutted in a fire early on Monday morning.

“I got a call from my neighbour at around 7.30 am saying my flat was on fire.

“I came rushing, but everything was gone.

“It’s all gone,” says Agu.

The second floor flat was charred but emergency services were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other rooms or other flats in the building.

Agu, who has had his tuck shop for eight years, was devastated by what has happened.

The business owner suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The Disaster & Emergency Management Services’ (Dems) acting media liaison manager, Eric Maloka, says, “On arrival, the fire crews found that there was a three-room flat that was burning and the occupants were busy trying to extinguish the fire with buckets of water.

“The fire crews managed to take control and extinguish the fire.

“There were two occupants in the flat at the time of the fire, and one patient was transported to hospital.

“The cause of the fire is unknown and to be investigated.”

Springs police spokesperson Capatin Johannes Ramphora added that an enquiry into the fire has been opened and that they are waiting for a forensic report.

No suspect has been arrested as nobody saw what transpired exactly.
