The programme aims to support disadvantaged learners from the Gauteng region by providing them with school uniforms.

The programme is run in partnership with a local waste management company.

The collaboration started in 2013. Since then 480 learners have benefited from this programme.

Thabiso Taaka, a stakeholder relations executive, says, “We are driven by the need to be responsible corporate citizens.

“We are part of the community and this is our part in encouraging learners to attend school.”

The company aims to expand its programme to KwaZulu-Natal in April.

The happy occasion was well attended.

Laerskool Welgedacht principal Kagiso Sithole was full of praise and gratitude for the sponsors.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors of this occasion who have continuously supported learners from this community,” Sithole says.

Vuyani Mpofu, the deputy director-general for education support at the Gauteng Department of Education, hoped this programme would inspire the public to adopt a learner from a local school to help them with school supplies.
