The learners of Selpark Primary School were eager to help in any way they can.

“Our learners were aware of what is happening in the Western Cape, as it is part of their curriculum,” says deputy principal Laura Thompson.

“They are passionate about helping others and they took it upon themselves to start a campaign to collect water for the Western Cape.

“It was a very successful campaign.”

The response from the learners was fantastic and they only needed a week to collect the 1 500 litres of water.

One learner was so empathetic to the plight of the people of the Western Cape that she wanted to move to there.

For Upendo Ng’oma, a Grade Five learner, it was the knowledge others were suffering that spurred her into action.

“We waste so much water, and it hurt me know that they don’t have enough water,” says Ng’oma.

The campaign forms part of the school’s community projects.

Selpark Primary School is very involved in the community and tries to do something every term.

Their projects differ according to the needs of the community.

The school is still collecting water for the Western Cape.

Those who wish to donate money can also do and the school will use the money to purchase water.
