The bar owner who did not die

A bar owner was shocked to learn about her death in an erroneous police report published by the Addie.

Following a recent article which wrongfully stated that the business owner of the Coffin Shoppe pub and grill was shot and killed, the actual owner, Bonnie Kleyn, would like the public to know she is alive and well.

Kleyn was interviewed by Springs Advertiser just days after police spokesmen had erroneously confirmed her death in the edition of February 22.

The incorrect statement formed part of a report announcing that a police reward was offered for information on a murder and robbery that took place at the establishment late last year.

Kleyn was shocked, to say the least when she heard from a friend she was dead.

The person who was shot and killed last year December was not one of Kleyn’s employees, but a previous member of staff’s fiancé, Ian Gouws.

As the previous employee and her fiancé were locking up the premises, suspects targeted the couple shot Gouws, who died on the scene.

Kleyn says this was the first incident since they opened where someone was killed and would like to assure residents of the extra security measures put in place since the incident.

“I have moved the security gate toward the building and there is more lighting on the premises,” she says.

“There is also a security guard on the premises every night and a local security company who assist us when we are closing.”

She adds that the pub and grill is safe, especially with the improved security measures in place.

“It was a tragic accident.”

The Springs police are busy with a murder investigation.
