Petrol station robbed in Springs, EMPD officer killed as robbers use AK-47 and R5 rifles

A drop-safe was bombed before an EMPD officer was shot and killed at a petrol station in Selcourt.

A petrol station in Selcourt was robbed after a drop-safe was bombed and a 50-year-old EMPD officers was shot and killed last night (Tuesday) at 10.50pm.

According to Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, corporate communications officer of the Ekurhuleni East Cluster, it is alleged a blue Toyota Corolla and a grey Audi A4 arrived at the filling station pretending to fill up with petrol.

“When the petrol attendant was paying in the money at the cashier, he was approached by the suspects who pointed firearms at him,” says Tshilate.

Four petrol attendants and a customer with a small child were forced into the kitchen while under guard.

The suspects allegedly bombed the drop-in safe and took an undisclosed amount of money as well as cigarettes.

“Whilst the robbery was in progress, it is alleged an EMPD officer and his partner arrived, in a marked vehicle, to buy airtime.”

The suspects started shooting at the EMPD officers and the officer driving sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on the scene.

His service weapon was stolen by the thieves.

The female officer escaped unharmed.

“Police detected that several shots were fired and numerous AK-47 and R5 empty rifle cartridges were found scattered all over the ground.”

An estimated of eight suspects fled in the two vehicles.

“Police are appealing to anyone with information or the possible whereabouts of the suspects to contact SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or send an sms to 32211.

A case of business robbery and murder was opened at the Springs Police Station.
