Dinosaurs a hit with Springs children

A family-friendly outing at The Dino Expo.

Children and adults alike were filled with wonder as they explored The Dino Expo.

The exhibition which took place at the Springs Civic Centre was filled with realistic, life-size, accurate to science, animated dinosaurs.

These pre-historic animals were brought to life by David Huni, a Zimbabwean artist with a passion for dinosaurs alongside the University of the Witwatersrand and the EuropAfrica Group.

When asked what was the aim of the exhibition, Huni says, “The aim of the exhibition is to educate and expose people to the pre-historic world, in particular, the rich fossil heritage South Africa has.

“It is important for people to learn about their heritage and this is my part in ensuring that happens.

“I really hope to inspire children to learn more about these wonderful animals.

“It was important to me to bring this show to a place like Springs because sometimes the small towns miss out on interesting events because they don’t live in Cape Town or Durban.

“The smaller towns are usually where the less privileged people live.”

Children of all ages were enjoying the exhibition which included the display of various kinds of dinosaurs, dinosaur rides, a hunt for dinosaur fossils as well as instant dinosaur egg pictures.

The family-friendly show was well attended and praised for being something different for the children of Springs to experience.

Vathiswa Ngxulelo, who brought her three children along said, “It was a really interesting exhibition and something new for my children to experience.

“It is good for them to learn about new things even if they were a little scared in the beginning.”

The exhibition will return to Springs in the next year.

“I hope to bring a bigger exhibition, a musical theatre as well as a dinosaur theme park because there is a lot of space here in Springs and people are receptive to it.

“Children especially seemed to enjoy the exhibition and I hope to make it more interactive next time around with cheaper tickets for schoolchildren,” says Huni.
