Residents outraged by roadside litter

Residents at Springs Retirement Village are outraged by the litter on Colliery Road in the CBD.

Cecelia Stevens, a member of the community, says: “The rubbish has steadily been piling up all week.

“The Ekurhuleni Metro picked up rubbish in December and have not been back since.

“They also sprayed poison on the edges next to the pavement.

“The grass was knee-high and now that they have cut it, all the litter that was buried underneath showed up as well as the litter that people have been throwing on the pavement.”

According to the residents, the failure of the municipality to collect the waste has also worsened the litter problem on Colliery Road as evidenced by the overflowing rubbish bins as well as the cut grass which is flying everywhere.

“The municipality usually brings the cleaners on the same day as the people who cut the grass, but this time they haven’t done that and it’s a big mess now,” says Stevens.

Stevens adds recyclers who go through the bins looking for recyclable materials are also causing chaos because they leave the litter lying on the outside of the rubbish bins.

The metro failed to respond by the time of publishing.
