Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, Ekurhuleni East Cluster spokesperson warns the public about carrying large sums of cash during the festive season.

He shared the following tips:
• Avoid withdrawing large amounts of money at ATMs.
• Always take someone with you when withdrawing money as well as the conveyancing of money.
• Always be alert.
• Check on cars and people following you from the bank.
• After withdrawing money, make sure no one is following you.
• If you notice suspicious people or a car following you, call the police for assistance.
• Keep police contact numbers.
• While at a bank or in an ATM queue, look at the people around you for possible identification.
• Stokvel and clubs should avoid sharing money in a public and unsecured environment.
“Rather request your respective bank to deposit the money into your bank account,” says Tshilate.
• Don’t allow strangers to offer help at the ATMs.
• Don’t give your bank card pin number to anyone.
• Always cover or protect your bank card pin number.
• Avoid offering lifts to strangers or by people impersonating police officers.
“Remember proper and relevant safety measures gives you the best safety for yourself, your property and others,” says Tshilate.
