Take charge of your thoughts

“Decide on that which you will think and concentrate upon.”

There is a magnificent, beautiful, wonderful painting in front of you.

It is intricate, detailed, a painstaking labour of devotion and love.

The colours are like no other – they swim and leap, they trickle and embellish.

And yet you choose to fixate your eyes on the small fly which has landed on it.

Why do you do such a thing?

Have you ever found yourself in a place where you are constantly bombarded with negative thoughts?

Isn’t it funny how easily we as humans can have a change of mood and at the same time develop negative thoughts?

What triggers that negative emotion inside of us?

We start thinking thoughts that we usually would not accommodate; why was I born, I am worthless and this then spirals, if uncontrolled, into thoughts of self-destruction – suicide.

The impact of negative thoughts are far reaching because they affect your health, your mood and mind, which could have far-reaching consequences – conversely focusing on positive things also has consequences.

Thus, if a negative or harmful thought comes into your mind, you mentally say, ‘I’m not going to dwell on that’.

Positive thoughts contribute towards a healthy outlook on life. It is uplifting, it heals from stress, anxiety, depression, grief and other issues.

By taking control of your thoughts you can achieve emotional balance (or equilibrium) and you are able to identify your heart’s desires, take positive action and make changes in your life.

Ghandi put it this way:

Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.
