Bahama bar brings Christmas joy to pensioners

Bahama Bar donated 460 food parcels to pensioners for Christmas.

Bahama Bar did its bit for pensioners in the community in the spirit of Christmas on Wednesday morning.

Bongani Skhosana and Ziba Khumalo, of Bahama, donated 460 food parcels to pensioners, as they have done for the past seven years.

“This year we have just used a different means to distribute the groceries.

“Instead of asking all the pensioners to come here, we will deliver the goods to different organisations who will then administer the process,” explains Skhosana.

Last year the distribution was disturbed by scuffles while the pensioners were waiting.

Pauline Mogase, of Leratong Senior Citizens, says 77 pensioners from the organisation will benefit this year.

“This contribution makes a major difference in the lives of most of the old people.

“They look forward to this time every year. They are waiting for me at the centre right now.”

Salome Mtshali, one of the area administrators, says they truly appreciate the businessmen’s efforts.

“People seldom pay attention to the needs of pensioners these days.

“We are grateful to people who still value us in the community.”

Mtshali says most of the pensioners carry the burden of taking care of relatives, especially grandchildren.

“Through the pensioners, the donations actually help a lot of people,” she says.

Skhosana acknowledges that the project will not reach everyone in need.

“We are helping more people each year, so that is a success.

“We will just press forward to do more to give back to our community.”
