FERH experiences partial water shortage

The Springs Advertiser has been inundated with calls regarding a water problem at the Far East Rand Hospital.

Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) is currently experiencing water problems.

According to the hospital spokesperson, Hendrik Buda, not all parts of the hospital are affected by the water shortage.

“Some of the nursing staff fetched water from the tap next to the fish pond to flush the toilets,” he says.

The matter has been reported to the Ekurhuleni metro who mentioned that a burst pipe in Dal Fouche is the cause of the water problem.

Buda says the problem has been going on since Sunday.

He says the metro has provided the hospital with water from a water tank.

He claims they only had to reschedule one operation because of the delay in receiving the autoclaved (sterilised) instruments from a hospital nearby.

“We are using the nearby hospital for the autoclaving of the instruments due to the shortage of steam in the FEHR,” says Buda.

The hospital does have a water reservoir which helped to provide water to the wards and offices on the first floor where the operating theatre is.

He explains they need water in the operating theatre for staff and doctors to wash their hands, for sterilising the instruments and to clean the area.

“The metro could not provide a time for when the burst pipe would be fixed,” says Buda.

No comment has been received from the metro.
