Get your vehicle ready for the holidays

Have your vehicle checked prior to taking a trip and make sure your emergency kit is packed.

The Automobile Association (AA) released a statement which warns motorists to prepare themselves for the busy roads across South African over the December holidays.

On December 6, public schools close for the end-of-year holidays, which will lead to thousands of motorists undoubtedly being on the roads soon thereafter.

The AA urges all motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition, and roadworthy before they take on a long trip.

“This time of the year it is important for families to reconnect, friends to come together, and for people to recoup from the long year,” the AA says.

Before taking a trip your vehicle should be checked out in good time.

Motorists should take the following tips into consideration before traveling:

• Plan your route, including the stops, and ensure you make provision to stop every 200kms or every two hours to rest, refuel and refresh.

• Avoid heavier traffic on the roads.

If possible, leave a day sooner or a day later and do the same for the return leg of your journey.

• Buckle up all passengers, including toddlers under three who, legally, must be in a car seat, and children 1.3m or shorter need to be in booster seats.

• Obey all the rules of the road.

• Be courteous of other drivers.

• Make sure your cellphone is always charged.

• Arrangements for overnight accommodation should be done prior to leaving your home.

• Vehicles should be in good condition, roadworthy and ready.

• Inspect all tyres, including the spare tyre, and make sure they have sufficient tread.

“Tyres are a key safety feature,” says the Association.

• Put cellphones and other electronic devices away while driving.

Take time and arrive at your destination calm and rested.

Once the vehicle has been serviced, make sure your roadside emergency service kit is packed.

You will be needing the following:

• Necessary tools to change a tyre including a wheel spanner, jack and a red warning triangle.

• An emergency torch and multipurpose tool.

• Jumper cables and towing rope.

• Flash light and extra batteries

• Gloves.

• Tyre sealant.

• First-Aid kit.

• Fire extinguisher.

• Tyre gauge.

• Drinking water.

“Going on a long journey is not a race, arriving safe is more important than arriving in a ‘record time’.

“Preparing for a road trip by having a good car, and clear mind, is as important as the holiday itself,” says the AA.

Motorists should consider services and maintenance on their vehicles now, before it is too late, and to avoid any last minute rushes from other drivers.
