Bogus EMPD officers hijack man at Springs off-ramp on N12 highway

The truck driver was allegedly stopped by two men wearing EMPD uniforms.

A white Isuzu truck was allegedly hijacked at the Springs off-ramp of the N12 highway on Thursday (November 23).

The driver was on his way to Delmas to deliver medicine, vaseline, toothpaste and baby food.

According to Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the driver claims there were three parked vehicles and two metro police officers stopped him.

Apparently the driver didn’t see official markings on any of the vehicles, but noticed that two vehicles had Mozambican number plates.

“One of the so-called EMPD officers approached the driver and asked for his driver’s licence and ordered the driver to get out of the truck,” says Ramphora.

The driver and his two passengers got out of the truck and were searched.

Ramphora says the driver claims three more men suddenly appeared armed with firearms. There were allegedly about seven other men as well, but only two were wearing EMPD uniforms.

The driver and his passengers were taken to one of the unmarked vehicles, ordered to get inside and held at gunpoint.

The armed suspect allegedly ordered them not to look at the men.

Ramphora says the victims were then taken to Johannesburg and dropped off at the R59 Meyerton off-ramp.

They went to the nearest garage and asked one of the petrol attendants to call the police.

The value of the stolen truck is R1 600 000, while the stock is worth about R160 000.

Police are investigating a case of hijacking.
