Appeal for cloth for reusable nappies

“We are collecting old towels, curtains and bed sheets to make washable nappies that the underprivileged can reuse.”

Three local churches, Mercyland International Christian Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Church Without Walls have joined hands in supporting the underprivileged with washable sanitary nappies.

The three churches will embark on a community service project in 2018 for recycling absorbent materials to make nappies for young children and the elderly.

“We are collecting towels, 100 per cent curtains and old bed sheets to make washable nappies that the underprivileged can be able to reuse,” says Pastor Oyinloluwa Eseh from Mercyland International Christian Church.

“In 2015 we started collecting materials to make reusable sanitary towels after we realised that there is a need with sanitary towels.”

Eseh says they were inspired to start helping after probing into the issue themselves.

“The fact that we didn’t realise that it was a problem at first made us realise that other people need to know about the project, hence we appeal to the community to assist us.”

Hetta Saccaggi from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints points out that women without money are forced to take unhygienic measures during their periods that can lead to health issues down the line.

The three church representatives say even if their ultimate goal isn’t met, they hope to see things move in the right direction.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be in charge of sewing the nappies, and Mercyland International Christian Church will be in charge of distributing them to old age homes, public hospitals and home-based care centres in Springs and surrounding areas.

“We ask the community to support us in alleviating the problems that are faced within our surroundings,” says Saccaggi.

If anyone is interested in donated absorbent materials, they can contact Eseh on 078 051 9383, Saccaggi on 083 560 6354 or Pastor Handy Nkosi on 084 315 1144.
