New go-karting venture at Springs Mall

Competitive go-kart racing fun for young and old at the Springs Mall.

A 500m go-kart racing track has attracted many people at the undercover parking section at Springs Mall since October 30.

Young and old visited the track and enjoyed the adrenaline-pumping action which will reward any driver.

Springs Mall marketing manager, Amoret D’Arrigo, says the track has definitely attracted many young people.

“We plan to keep the youth of Springs entertained until the end of December,” she says.

The idea came from a community request posted on the mall’s social media page.

“Many requests were made and one of them was go-kart racing,” says D’Arrigo.

The racetrack was quite an attraction for many ‘boys’ who satisfied their appetite for racing over the weekend.

On Sunday, Casseldale resident Michael van der Walt (29) said it is a nice idea which will continue to attract the youth.

While visiting the mall they noticed the track, and he challenged his brother-in-law Freddie Schutze to the 15 laps on a 5.7 horsepower go-kart.

It was a bumpy ride for van der Merwe and Schutze claimed victory for the 15-lap race.

“He has more experience than I do, but it was still a lot of fun,” says van der Merwe.

He suggested the mall consider a bigger track and perhaps a permanent one.

“This will be great as there is really not much to do in Springs over weekends,” he says.

According to him the price to race is also reasonable.

“Boys will be boys,” says van der Merwe.

Schutze expressed his joyful victory as “lekker” and suggested a bigger track.

For Ross Belford (23) the racetrack was something to do on a Sunday afternoon.

“The competition is great,” he says.

It was a ‘wall of fame’ moment for Siyabonga Ndlovu who tried his luck in one of the cars.

This 21-year-old says it was entertainment at its best.

Scott Griffiths (21) found the racing quite competitive.

“It was great fun,” he says.

Dal Fouche resident and owner of the cars, Adam Ntsweni, says the track is there for people to enjoy themselves.

“There are three smaller cars available for junior riders aged five years and older, and three bigger cars for older competitors,” says Ntsweni.

The track is open daily between 10am and 6pm.
