Gunmen kill taxi driver, kidnap passengers

Five unknown armed men assaulted a family and shot and killed the driver of a Toyota Quantum.

A 28-year-old man was shot and killed in front of his family in Selcourt on Saturday evening.

Andile Nslati, the driver of a Toyota Quantum, was shot in the head in front of 14 of his family members and friends on the corner of Rhokana and Ramona roads.

He was allegedly driving the Quantum at 8.30pm after returning from a picnic and dropping off the people at their respective homes.

According to Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, Nslati turned into Rokana Road when five suspects appeared from nowhere and stood in the middle of the road.

“They fired shots at the Quantum and Nslati was hit by a bullet. The men approached the vehicle and one of the suspects shot Nslati in the head,” says Ramphora.

Nslati’s body was pulled from the vehicle and the rest of the armed men got into the Quantum.

“They instructed the passengers not to look at them,” says Ramphora.

The deceased’s body was left behind when the armed men drove off with all 14 passengers still in the Quantum.

Ramphora says the armed men took the passengers to the old KwaThema Cemetery in Extension Three.

They ordered them to hand over all their valuables including jewellery, cellphones, shoes and cash.

“The armed men left the passengers and the Quantum behind and fled the scene on foot,” says Ramphora.

Ekurhuleni East Cluster commander Maj Gen Girly Mbele appealed to the community to work hand in hand with the police to help track down the culprits, but not to apprehend them because they are dangerous.

The motive for the crime is unknown.

Police are investigating a case of murder, kidnapping and hijacking.
