Hijackers take truck to Alexandra and remove its cargo

A hijacked truck driver was taken to Alexandra and locked up in a room before he was released.

Three armed suspects hijacked a truck on the N12 near Springs at 1pm on Monday.

The driver of a Scania truck was on his way to Maputo, Mozambique from Johannesburg to allegedly deliver energy drinks.

According to Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the driver was pushed off the road by the suspects’ vehicles.

The driver claims a white VW Polo and a blue unknown vehicle were involved in the incident.

The truck was pulling two trailers containing 32 palettes of energy drinks.

“Three suspects jumped from the Polo and forced the driver out of his seat before taking control of the vehicle,” says Ramphora.

One of the suspects was armed with a firearm.

“A second suspect, wearing a police jacket, covered the driver’s head with a T-shirt before they took control of the truck,” says Ramphora.

The drivers of the Polo and the blue vehicle followed the truck.

Ramphora says the suspects took the driver with them and drove to Alexandra where they locked the driver up in a room.

“The suspects left the driver in the room until about 6pm before they released him,” says Ramphora.

The truck was recovered in City Deep, Cleveland and was taken to the Cleveland Police Station.

“The cargo was stolen from the trailers,” says Ramphora.

Police are investigating a case of hijacking.
