SAPS warning: Hijacking technique – Criminals take number plates

Springs police warn the community of a new way hijackers use to approach the unsuspecting vehicle owner and steal the vehicle.

Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says the hijackers will follow their victims to a parking lot or mall.

After the vehicle is parked they remove one number plate and wait for the driver to drive off.

The suspects then follow the driver and overtake the vehicle displaying the number plate in their window as if the victim had lost it.

“To the unsuspecting vehicle owner, it looks like the hijackers want to give back the number plate,” says Ramphora.

The shocked victim bring the vehicle to a halt to get the number plate from them.

Ramphora says this is all they want you to do.

“By the time you realise what happened it is too late and your vehicle was hijacked,” he says.

Police urge all motorists to be vigilant and alert at all times.

His advice is to rather not stop for anything.

“Criminals are clever and will use any modus operandi to get what they want,” says Ramphora
