The Springs Boys’ High school brass band recently made their school proud by winning two competitions.
They participated in the national South African Marching Bands Association (Samba) competition, which was held at Cornwall College in Pretoria.
Gordon Gasson, their co-ordinator, says only the best of the best bands in the country participate in this competition.
“The percussion and marching bands entered and, yet again, they did exceptionally well and made us proud as per usual,” he says.
Gasson says their ‘world class’ performance earned them first place.
According to him the percussion band thoroughly entertained both the crowd and adjudicators.
Muzi Sikhosana, a Grade 10 learner, trained the percussion players and compiled the music as well as the choreography for the competition.
“This makes us even prouder of this young musician and his team,” says Gasson.
At the event, the marching band seemed to have been the ‘main crowd-pleaser’ of the night.
“They displayed precise marching moves. All the members were synchronized as was their marching to the choreography,” he says.
The songs they performed on the night included Prince of Thieves – the theme song of the movie Rocky -Malanguenya and Paint it Black.
In addition, the marching band placed first in their category for the night.
They have also made their school proud at the recent Springs Music and Arts Festival, by entering two sections namely Percussion Band and Marching Band and were awarded the winning trophy.
Gasson says the band members were magnificent and stole the show.
The percussion band attained an A+ with the average of 85 per cent and the marching band attained an A++ with an average of 95 per cent which qualified them for a prestige award.
“We are so very proud of the boys as they have worked extremely hard,” says Gasson.
“We look forward to 2018 and hope the band will grow from strength to strength,” says Gasson.
