Quick metro response can save water

“It is nobody's fault, but water waste could have been prevented.”

After almost four weeks of constant communication between a Selection Park resident and the metro, the water leak issue has been resolved.

Selection Park resident Liza Venter says the only problem is that a lot of clean water was wasted.

When she contacted the metro on October 1 with regards to her water meter which was running too fast, she thought they would quickly send out a team to investigate.

However, it took almost 11 days before metro workers arrived to investigate and informed her about a possible leaking pipe on her property.

Venter contacted a private plumber who replaced the burst pipe.

She claims he informed her galvanised that burst pipes usually leak downwards and therefore, she would not have noticed where the leak was.

Venter checked the meter when she heard a sizzling sound coming from the kitchen pipes on October 1.

“It was then I noticed the meter was running extremely fast,” she says.

Venter continuously monitored the meter, but the meter kept running too fast.

“Being a water conscious person, I closed the tap at the water meter on October 9.

She claims they had no water pressure when she opened the tap the next day.

When they used the shower, the water coming from the taps was brown.

She received three different reference numbers from the metro and when metro workers finally arrived on October 11, they only looked at the fast running meter.

They allegedly informed her to look for a water leak on her property because they believed that was causing the meter to run fast.

Currently, her only concern is that her water account might be extremely high, but she plans on visiting the metro offices to make an arrangement.

Venter’s advice to the metro is to assist the community by sending out workers immediately after the first complaint.

“Eleven days of water waste could add quite a substantial amount to your account,” she says.

Metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, says the closing and opening of the council stop cock amounts to illegal tampering and a penalty will be levied against their account.
