Suspect arrested after shoot-out with police

One suspect was arrested during a police patrol that ended in a shootout.

Springs police were allegedly shot at on the corner of First Avenue and Fifth street in Geduld on Monday.

Springs Crime Prevention Unit patrol officers, Sgt Oelof de Meyer, Cst Thokozane Zwane and Cst Juan-Pierre Nichols were on police patrol when they noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle.

The driver of the VW Amarok was driving without lights and speeding in First Avenue at 8.20pm.

“When the police officers tried to cut off the driver of the Amarok, he started shooting at the police, who then retaliated,” says Capt Johannes Ramphora, the Springs police spokesperson.

One suspect was arrested and one firearm, a stolen iPhone and the Amarok were recovered.

Ramphora says the two victims were not injured but traumatised.

The suspect (age unknown) will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.

This comes after a hijacking took place at a business in Fourth Avenue and Third Street.

Ramphora says the owner of the business was about to lock his back gate, when three armed suspects pointed their firearms at him and the shop assistant.

“The suspects forced the two victims into the owner’s Amarok and drove off,” says Ramphora.

The police are still on the hunt for two more suspects who ran away.

Police are investigating a case of hijacking and kidnapping.
