Sungum celebrates the importance of giving back

The Bhairavi Sungum of Springs had their “Give a Tray“ annual project on Deepavali Day at the Bakerton Community Centre.

The annual Bhairavi Sungum of Springs’ Give a Tray on Deepavali Day project was held on Thursday opposite the Bakerton Community Centre.

Every year on Deepavali, the Bakerton community collects sweets and homemade baked goods to be donated to orphanages and care centres.

This year’s recipient was the Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society.

A total of 40 Deepavali cheer hampers were handed over to families within the community on behalf of Thamizh Seva Sungam, a group of business individuals.

Kesavan Pillay, chairman of the Bhairavi Sungum says he is pleased that every year the community celebrates with consideration for the less fortunate.

“I would like to thank the Bakerton community and the Thamizh Seva Sungam for their constant support,” says Pillay.

Deepavali is the festival of lights and is a metaphor for resisting evil, for dispelling darkness and for showing compassion to others.

“Deepavali is the celebration of the inner light over spiritual darkness and a festive reiteration of the Hindu belief that the good ultimately triumphs over evil,” says Pillay.

The festival is widely identified by new beginnings, lights, bursting fireworks, sweetmeats, feasts as well as a time of being with family and friends.
