The metro has responded to a report about when the prefab slabs will be replaced at Geduld Cemetery.
The top two rows of prefab slabs of the Geduld Cemetery were recently removed in Market Road running parallel to Paul Kruger Highway.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, says the slabs are being stolen as there is no security at the cemetery.
Although there are funds to replace the stolen slabs, in the absence of security, the theft is likely to continue which amounts to wasteful expenditure.
Gadebe says the wall is vandalised by the squatters living in the old building within the cemetery.
He says EMPD is conducting a security assessment to enable the department to budget for security.
“This is to improve security at cemeteries to prevent such theft and vandalism,” says Gadebe.
