Rotarians hand over ‘knitted knockers’

A morning of fun was had by all Cansa supporters.

Reach for Recovery benefited from a Stepping out for Cancer event hosted by the Rotary Club of Springs on Saturday.

The event, Stepping out for Cancer, was held at Springs Boys’ High School in support of the Cansa network.

Reach for Recovery is a non-profit breast cancer support group.

Josey Nonkonyana, acting chairman of the group, says they have had a five-year relationship with the Rotary club.

“Rotary is always willing to assist us where possible either with breast prosthesis called ‘knitted knockers’, or funds,” says Nonkonyana.

On Saturday, they received a box full of knitted breast prosthesis, bags and pillow cases.

Nonkonyana usually receives a call from a hospital on the required bra size and then tries to support those women who cannot afford a medical prosthesis.

Nonkonyana has survived breast, liver and bone cancer and has been clean for the past 28 years.

According to Rotarian Cheryl Havenga, the breast prosthesis can be obtained from Knitted Knockers South Africa.

Included in the kit are synthetic cotton, a pattern and cotton stuffing.

She says they have, with the help of Rotary Anns, knitted these kits which they have donated to the Reach for Recovery team.

“Each kit makes two prosthesis, depending on the size of the bra size,” says Havenga.

Frances Tsahbalala from Reach for Recovery, who is also a breast cancer survivor, says they are grateful for all their supporters, especially the Rotarians.
