Extended date for Phase one of Payneville Extension Three development

Phase One of the new development is still on track without any delays.

Phase One of the Payneville Extension Three construction will not be completed at the end of the month.

Site construction manager, Thabo Matsheba, says while construction is still on track, he has requested an extended date because they started Phase One late.

Phase One only started in January, and major progress has been made, but the metro has granted an extension date.

Construction period only started in January and was expected to be completed at the end of October but has been extended to November 29.

“We started late because the process was delayed because of protests,” he says.

Matsheba says they are on track as per schedule without any delays.

This new development promises residents of Gugulethu/Everest Informal Settlement a brighter future.

There will be three entry points to the new development.

One will be linked to Welgedacht Road, while the other two roads are linked to Grootvaly Road.

Matsheba says they were given permission by the metro to remove the trees which currently block the entrance to the development in Welgedacht Road.

“Only a few large trees, but we will remove them in due time,” he says.

The construction of roads and stormwater drain infrastructure form part of Phase One of the new development.

The metro planned to build low-cost housing in the area in 2014, but several obstacles were part of the delay.

The original plan was for metro to construct toilets and move Gugulethu/Everest Informal Settlement.

In 2016, the proposed Payneville toilet project of 2010 was abandoned and the 1 050 toilets built were never utilised.

Ward Clr Dean Stone previously stated the start of the construction means they are moving in the right direction.

Phase Two will include the construction of 1097 subsidised houses and is projected to be completed during the 2018/2019 financial year.

Despite sending questions to the metro, no comment had been received at the time of publishing.
