A Springs resident noticed construction work has started at Murray Park after no contractor was visible on site since January.
Murray Park was once the pride and joy of Springs.
According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the lack of contractors on site was due to the metro’s process of appointing a new contractor for phase three at the time.
Although phase one and two were completed in time, they only recently started with phase three.
In a comment received in January Gadebe says they cannot provide an opening date.
“We are not sure how long the aspects of the master plan will take to complete,” he says.
Springs resident Sean Byrne noticed contractors were busy with renovations at the park last week.
He believes they started to lay paving sections as huge stacks of bricks were prepped for laying pavement.
He thinks it is going to pretty awesome once the lower section dam has been cleared, along with the new infrastructure that is being constructed at the park.
“The reopening of Murray Park is going to go a long way in bringing people back to the place and enjoy its former glory days, so to speak,” says Sean Byrne.
Environmentalist Stan Madden remembers taking his family there in the early 1960s.
“It wasn’t just the Springs people who enjoyed the resort, but the community from other East Rand towns would enjoy the surroundings and amenities that Murray Parks was known for,” he says.
He remembers the caravan park and camping area was always populated and during public holidays was pleasantly crowded.
“The South African Caravan Club held regular rallies for their members at the resort and it was not unusual to have 50 caravans at one of these rallies.
“This was by far the most popular municipal caravan park on the East Rand,” says Madden.
His has faith in the metro to, once construction is completed, give the community the same great atmosphere and spirit that the resort prevailed years ago.
“I will soon visit the park since construction started and I want to see the progress of the metro contractors as well as the different zones created as mentioned by Gadebe,” says Ramesh Sheodin, ward councillor.
