Volunteers clean Geduld Cemetery

A 110-year-old cemetery in Geduld is looking much better, thanks to two dedicated volunteers.

Bob Gillies, a businessman in Geduld recently visited the Geduld Cemetery when he noticed slabs of the concrete walls were being removed and that the cemetery was in a poor state.

He says weeds and dead leaves covered the cemetery which prompted him to take action and arrange the clean-up of the cemetery.

“We decided to employ two volunteers to assist with the clean-up,” he says. The cemetery is situated on the corner of Market Road and First Avenue in Geduld.

“We pay attention to important sites around Springs which we feel are neglected.

“Once we have achieved moderate cleanliness at a site, we move on to another site or re-visit previous sites,” says Gillies.

Evidence Muzerengani and Kevin Thavhiwa, the two volunteers, are currently removing dead leaves and refuse.

They say they are more than happy to clean the area at the cemetery because it gives them the opportunity to make a difference.

“We have been raking up the leaves and planting aloe plants on the sides of the pathways.

“The aloes are just a way to add more ‘life’ to the cemetery,” says Muzerengani.

The two volunteers say they are happy to be given a job which will help them to provide for their families.

Muzerengani says: “Gillies neatens our town a bit and by cleaning up the cemetery, we restore dignity and show respect to the deceased who cannot speak for themselves.”

Gilles organises the transport needed to remove the black bags they fill with weeds, leaves and refuse. He takes all the bags to the Rietfontein landfill site.
