Bhairavi Sungum hosts 25th Sarasvathee celebrations

The Bhairavi Sungum of Springs hosted their 25th Sarasvathee celebration on Sunday in the hall of the Springs Secondary School.

The 25th annual Sarasvathee celebrations hosted by the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs took place in the hall of the Springs Secondary School on Sunday.

The celebrations, which included a multi-cultural heritage concert, is an event were Hindu’s come together in celebration of the Deity Mother Sarasvathee.

Kesavan Pillay says Deity Mother Sarasvathee represents education, music and the arts.

“This collective milestone not only for us but all organisations and senior members who saw it fit to initiate and partake in a celebration that highlights Sarasvathee – our source of knowledge, music and arts,” says Pillay.

The programme was packed with music, song and dance.

The lighting of the universal lamp reflected the cohesive relations of the many dignitaries and organisations present at the celebration.

The many linguistic and cultural items were performed by members of the Benoni Tamil School Board, B&S Bhajan Group, East Rand Raam Bhajan Group, Springs Hindu Seva Samaj, Springs Sanathan Ved, Dharam Sabha, Springs Sathya Sai Centre, Springs Tamil Association and the Bhairavi Tamil School.

The guest speaker Punitha (Priscilla) Pillay of the Heidelberg Vinayagar Temple shared a special message highlighting the importance of heritage and motherhood.

“As a mother, the most important aspect is to love, appreciate and do the best that you can do,” says Pillay.

The final dance item of the evening was performed by children from the Bhairavi Tamil School.

Kesavan Pillay, chairman of the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs, says preserving and celebrating such an event honours the future generation and acknowledges their heritage in language, music and dance.

He adds that the strength of the community’s Culture lies in the hands of the children and that parents play an important role in enhancing this through the various organisations present.
