Rotary to host “Stepping Out For Cancer”

Springs Rotary Club will host its third annual run and walk to raise awareness for all cancer types.

The Springs Rotary Club will host a “Stepping Out For Cancer” 5km run/walk and a morning market on October 14.

Present president Siobheanne Landsberg says this years theme, “Stepping Out For Cancer”, was created to be more inclusive and to raise awareness for all cancer types.

The theme was previously called “The Pink Parade” which focused on breast cancer awareness as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“The aim of the walk is to raise awareness regarding all cancers and to create a support network for those who need it and not just those going through the disease,” says Landsberg.

The Rotary also aims to honour those who are fighting, have fought and won cancer and more especially to remember those who have lost the fight.

“Participants are encouraged to dress up on the day – it’s always fun seeing teams walk in uniforms like tutus, branded shirts etc. There will also be a prize for best-dressed.”

Each person will receive a ribbon upon entry whereby they write the name of the person they are walking for or in memory of. The ribbon gets tied onto their wrists.

“Upon their return, they tie it to a special tree where they’ll take a moment to reminisce.”

The Rotary is still looking for stall holders to come forward with fresh fruit and vegetables and nutritional supplements to create an awareness on healthy living.

“On the day we will also be holding live fitness/sports demonstrations to encourage everyone to get up and move.”

The club has already booked a yoga demo as well as a zumba/boot camp demo to entertain participants on the

day.

The proceeds from the event will be divided amongst Reach for Recovery and Rotary Cancer-Related Projects.

Anyone who is interested in taking part may contact Landsberg on rotary.springs@gmail.com for more info and bookings.
