New manhole covers in store

Metro will soon install new manhole covers to prevent foreign objects from being thrown in sewage holes.

Metro commented on a recent complaint about the continuous sewage leak between Dersley and Eastvale.

“Technicians unblocked the reported sewer line and it was cleared last week with a high-pressure jetting machine,” says Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson.

The metro plans to install big rodding eyes and a junction with a piece of pipe, instead of manhole covers.

Gadebe says this will prevent access to the sewer lines, especially around the vicinity where illegal mining activities are taking place.

Metro technicians continuously find the heavy-duty covers on the manholes open and the foreign objects found inside cause the blockages.

Eastvale resident CJ Kruger previously suggested the pump house needed to be upgraded as its capacity might be a problem.

However, the metro disagrees.

“The pump capacity is not the problem for this line as it is a gravity line,” says Gadebe.
